Mother's Day at Sweetwater Christian Church

We owe a lot to our moms. Many times, they’re the ones dragging us to church on time (and making sure we brushed our teeth!). Maybe for you, it’s Grandma or an aunt or a family friend – but in a real way they are all mothers too!

Let’s flip the switch and make it our mission to make sure they (our Moms, Sisters with Kids, and all those who have been and are Mothers to us) make it to church on Mother’s Day so we can show them just how much we value them.

We have some really neat things planned for the day – including a professional photo booth for you and your family to take some nice pictures as well as a special gift for every woman who joins us. Something even more special is planned for service, but we’re keeping that gift a secret. Just know, she’ll be so happy you invited and got her to church that morning.

We’ll still be worshipping at our regular service times (8:45 am and 10:45 am) and we so hope you’ll join us for Mother’s Day at Sweetwater Christian Church!

Can I Invite my mom if she doesn't go to our church?

The answer is a big YES! Maybe your mother goes to another church, or doesn’t have a church home at all – either way, we think she will enjoy being with her family on a day where we honor her. Check out the button below for an easy way to invite your mother!

What's the easiest way for me to invite my mother?

  1. We’ve put together a professional email that you can use to send an invitation to your mom! Click the invitation button below to send your mom an invite now!
  2. Give her a phone call and invite her that way (moms love when we call!)
  3. Send her a text – maybe something like: “Hi Mom! Would you like to join me at my church on Mother’s Day? We are doing some special things to honor our mothers and I’d love to be able to extend that appreciation to you!”
  4. On the phone, or over text, or in-person, let her know she can find more details about the service at this website: sweetwaterchristian.org/mothersday (not too hard to remember!)

What if I'm not a Mother? What if Mother's Day is an especially painful day for me or my family?

We know that Mother’s Day brings mixed emotions, but we want to be intentional about welcoming everyone at our service and creating an atmosphere where all can worship and find God’s presence.

For some, Mother’s Day is full of joy. For others, it’s a mixed bag. Some in our congregation would like to have children but haven’t been able to yet. Many of our congregation members have experienced miscarriages (you aren’t alone). Many of our mothers have passed away and we are reminded of our grief on days like Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day can be a mix of emotions, but we still believe that we can celebrate the gift of Motherhood given to all women (and we will honor all women – no awkward moments in service where you feel excluded or don’t know whether you’re a part of our celebration) primarily because the virtues of Motherhood are the virtues we find perfectly modeled in our God. The Scriptures use maternal metaphors to describe God: two of the most vivid are pictures of God as a mother bird sheltering her children under her wings and God as a mother bear protecting her cubs from attacks. Particularly in Isaiah, God compares his love, compassion, and guidance to that of a human mother:

“For a long time I [God] have kept silent, I have been quiet and held myself back. But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant.” (Isa. 42:14)

“As a mother comforts her child, so will I [God] comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.” (Isa. 66:13)

“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I [God] will not forget you!” (Isa. 49:15)

Anytime a women embodies these loving characteristics of God, she is faithfully tapping into a mother-like role for the people around her.

All this to say, we understand how hard this day can be. We wouldn’t blame you if you think you might have to stay home this year.

But we do hope you’ll be able to find comfort and hope no matter your circumstance and we do want you to know that if you can find the grace to join us you will be honored as an amazing woman made in God’s image.
